Tragically, a local teenaged girl riding her bike on County Road 2 was killed in an accident on Friday, August 30th. Her death is heartbreaking and the Township shares in the community’s grief. Our thoughts are with her family, friends and loved ones.

In the wake of this tragedy, the community has raised important questions about improved safety measures for pedestrians and cyclists along this important corridor of our community and more multi-use paths between the villages of Long Sault and Ingleside. The Township shares this vision. Through our Waterfront Development Plan, we have been discussing and advocating for enhancements and greater partnerships to see these improvements.

County Road 2 is owned and maintained by the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry. Much of the land around County Road 2 is owned by the St. Lawrence Parks Commission, with the remainder owned by private landowners. Ontario Power Generation also maintains the shoreline.

Since the terrible accident, we have reached out to the United Counties, the St. Lawrence Parks Commission, as well as our partners at the Province in an effort to resume discussions to find short and long-term solutions to prevent another tragedy.

As these discussions continue, we strive to provide updates as we increase our advocacy for safety improvements to connect our communities.

We once again off our deepest condolences to Charlotte’s family and all who loved her.

FAQ

 Who owns County Road 2?
The United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry owns and maintains County Road 2 and the Right of Way.
Who owns the land around County Road 2?
Much of the land around County Road 2 is owned by the St. Lawrence Parks Commission. Some of the land is owned privately.
Why is it taking so long to extend the recreation path along County Road 2?
The community has been advocating for more multi-use paths and to improve pedestrian and bike safety along the road and Waterfront Trail.

A project to extend the recreation path is complex. The path would extend over several kilometers. The land is near the shoreline and is environmentally sensitive. Multiple owners own the land. The costs would be significant. For example, a 2021 assessment put the potential cost to extend the path at more than $10 million.

Through our Waterfront Development Plan, we have been discussing and advocating to the Counties, the Parks Commission and the Province to find a way to extend the path. We continue to reach out on behalf of our community
Who can I contact to advocate to extend the path?
Members of the community who would like to share their feedback on the path, can reach out to Nolan Quinn, your local Member of Provincial Parliament, or the St. Lawrence Parks Commission, which is a Crown agency of the Province.
