Township Receives Proposal for Water and Wastewater Rate Adjustments

Published on 27 November 2019

In response to the inaccurate information reported on the Standard Freeholder site on November 26, 2019, the Township wishes to clarify the statement that there will be a 50.9% increase to wastewater rates in the hamlets of Ingleside and Long Sault if Council approves and adopts the consultant’s report.

The proposed 50.9% includes a 44.9% transfer of the Special Area Rate Tax Levy included on the Property Tax Bill to the Utility Bill.  The proposed increase recommended for 2020 is 6.0% in wastewater rates for Ingleside and Long Sault, a lower increase to wastewater rates experienced over the past two years.

Currently, homeowners in Ingleside and Long Sault are charged a “Special Area Tax” included in their property taxes, which is associated with the wastewater systems within the two hamlets. Under the proposal presented to Council, residents in Ingleside and Long Sault will see the Special Area Tax removed from their property taxes and allocated to their utilities bill.

A recommendation will be presented to Council at the December 11 Regular Council Meeting, which will include a communication plan to help residents understand the proposed changes to their property tax and utility bills.
