South Stormont Opts-in For Retail Cannabis Stores, Seeks Input on Draft Policy
Published on 18 December 2018
On December 12, 2018 the Township of South Stormont “opted in” to allowing retail cannabis stores and passed the following resolution:
Moved by Councillor Guindon
Seconded by Councillor Woods
“That Council opts-in to permitting retail cannabis stores within the Township of South Stormont and instructs staff to post the draft “Township of South Stormont Cannabis Retail Policy” on the Township website for public consultation.”
The draft “Township of South Stormont Cannabis Retail Policy” will help guide Township staff in responding to potential applications for cannabis retail stores within the municipality.
In addition to the guidelines outlined in the Township's draft policy above, the Province have also indicated setbacks required in areas near schools. The Provincial setbacks regarding schools are as follows:
A cannabis retail store cannot be located near a school or private school, as defined in the Education Act, if the proposed retail store is less than 150 metres away from the property line of the school or private school. This will be determined as follows:
When the school or private school is the primary or only occupant of a building, 150 metres shall be measured from the property line of the property on which the school or private school is located.
When the school or private school is not the primary or only occupant of a building, 150 meters shall be measured from the boundary of any space occupied by the school or private school within the building.
Please send any comments on the draft policy to Peter Young, Director of Planning and Economic Development by January 15, 2019.
