Economic Development Strategy
What is Strategic Planning?
Strategic planning is the process of envisioning a desired future and translating that vision into broadly defined goals or objectives as well as a sequence of steps to achieve them.
The Township of South Stormont’s Economic Development Strategy and Action Plan provides an understanding of the community’s recent performance against a range of local and regional socio-economic indicators. The Plan builds on the objectives of the 2013 South Stormont Economic Development Strategic Plan, 2012 United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Economic Development Strategic Action Plan, and the 2014 Eastern Ontario’s Economic Development Strategy.
The process undertaken to develop an update to the Township’s Economic Development Strategic Plan included research and analysis of the current context in the region and South Stormont, a comprehensive consultation and engagement process with business and community leaders and regional organizations and analysis of the 2016 Statistics Canada Census data. The process also included input from select business stakeholders, elected officials and senior staff and an updated SOAR assessment (strengths, opportunities, aspirations and results), which were then reviewed to determine the Township’s most effective way to reach economic development goals. The Township roles were also placed into context with the SDG roles to avoid duplication of efforts and provide effective service to businesses and residents.
Through 2007 and 2008 Phases I and II of a Business Retention and Expansion project were completed. Key action items included:
- Growth and Development;
- Embrace Upper Canada Region Branding;
- Municipal Actions, including infrastructure, appropriately zoned land and enacting property standards regulations;
- Business Actions, including promotion and support of Chamber of Commerce and business groups; and
- Safety and Security.
Since those documents were adopted, staff and Council have been working to implement the various action items specified in order to achieve the overall goals.
